Q&A with Diona Joyce

 

Q: What do you want people to know about Filipino food and culture and why do you have a passion to share it?

A: I started Kanto (means corner store in Tagalog) because there wasn't a lot of mainstream Filipino street food in Toronto. We wanted to show there are more exciting street food options than what was available at the time.

Q: What has been the best part of your experience running a Filipino restaurant in Toronto?

A: I started my first location out of a shipping container on the corner of Bathurst and Dundas to mimic the same feeling and experience as that in the Philippines. Being in a diverse city has allowed me to experiment with different fusions and menu ideas. Perfecting them and wowing the customers with a brand new experience in a city that craves variety has been a wonderful process.

Q: What’s next for Tita Flips and what do you want to see your brand become?

A: My overall dream is to have many different corner stores (Kanto) throughout the city to continue serving our exciting Filipino dishes to a wider, diverse audience.
